Backup and restore GarageBand projects on iPhone, iPod, or iPad

This article relates to GarageBand being used on an iOS device.  An iOS device at the time of writing is either a iPhone, iPad or iPod.

Backup GarageBand project files

The instructions on the Apple website in the article entitled “GarageBand for iOS:  Backup your songs” will explain how to export your GarageBand project/s from your iDevice and save them to your computer.

After syncing your device in step 4 you will come to the  File Sharing in iTunes step, the Save To dialog asks you to select the folder that you want to save the project into.   In my case I created a hierarchy of folders because I use a few music-creation apps on iOS and want to differentiate where I store the related files.  My folder is -

  • “C:MusicMyCreationsiOSGarageBand”

Navigate into the folder and press “Select” or “Save”.

If you have a look at the files in “C:MusicMyCreationsiOSGarageBand”, you will see an additional folder called “YourProjectName.band”, containing multiple files and folders – the components of your project.

GarageBand: Restoring your songs onto your iOS device from your computer (.band project files)

At the time of writing,  iTunes does not allow you to save a folder into an App with the iTunes File Sharing utility, so you can’t restore a backup of your projects (or somebody else’s if you’re trying to collaborate)  into your iDevice.

You need to install a freeware program called iExplorer (formally iPhone Explorer).  If you prefer to pay for a program to do this, DiskAid is equivalent to iExplorer)

  1. Plug your iPhone/iPod/iPad in and run iExplorer.
  2. Locate this folder in iExplorer of your iPod, “stu iPhone 4S/Apps/com.apple.mobilegarageband/Documents”
  3. Drag the “.band” folder into iExplorer from Windows Explorer onto iExplorer to put the files

Import the project to GarageBand for iOS

After you’ve used iExplorer to copy the .band folder from your computer onto your iDevice, run GarageBand on your iPhone/iPod/iPad.

Use the down-arrow to display the list of shared projects. The dir you dropped there will appear in the list, press it and the project appears in your available projects list.
